Orange Turmeric Immune Juice

March 24, 2020 in Beverages, Breakfast Recipes, Remedies

It would be an understatement to say that there is an adjustment period going on right now for all of us. We’re all navigating the uncharted “shelter in place” territory, social distancing and trying to figure out how to best structure days that are completely different from the usual routine. I’ve listened to a spectrum of perspectives as I continue to work with clients experiencing all the new challenges that come with living during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been impressed and amazed with the commitment I have seen to health and wellness during all of this. People are making it work. Trainers are working out with clients in the virtual space, people are getting back to nature, making creations in the kitchen and eating home cooked meals. We’re adapting to this temporary new way of life.

That isn't to say there aren’t countless obstacles. But we’re smart. We strategize and we plan. We work with what we’ve got.

Today I’m sharing a juice recipe that we made and photographed a few weeks before the stuff hit the fan. It’s an immune supporting recipe, which is fitting for our current situation, but wasn’t intentional. Immune health is something we always focus on. Optimal functioning is a passion of ours no matter what’s happening.

Pro-Tip: Our favorite juicer is made by Hurom. The technology is top-notch and the ease of cleaning makes this thing something you can use every day.

Let’s talk a bit about the science behind the things that make this recipe a big dose of healthy.

  1. Antioxidants

This juice contains the antioxidants vitamin C and E. Antioxidants protect our bodies from oxidative damage that occurs from production of free radicals. Oxidative damage is a natural process that can be made worse by things like stress, illness and exposure to environmental pollutants. When the immune system becomes activated by a pathogen, free radicals result and we need antioxidants to balance things out and prevent further damage. Citrus and bell peppers are fantastic sources of vitamin C and E.

  2. Beta-carotene

Carrots contain beta-carotene, a carotenoid that research has shown can enhance cell-mediated immune responses, particularly in the elderly.

  3. Curcumin

One of the best things you can add into your daily immune-boosting routine is curcumin. A component of turmeric, curcumin has been shown to be a powerful immunomodulatory agent. According to this article, curcumin can modulate multiple types of immune cells critical in your body’s defenses against potentially harmful pathogens. It’s also known for its beneficial effects on arthritis, allergy, asthma, atherosclerosis, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and cancer.

  4. Fresh Ginger

Mostly known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, fresh ginger may also be a powerful antiviral agent.
